How It Works

AirTags operate through a simple but powerful process:

  1. Bluetooth Broadcasting Each AirTag continuously broadcasts an encrypted Bluetooth signal containing a rotating identifier. This ensures privacy while enabling tracking.

  2. Network Coverage When any iPhone or iPad comes within range of an AirTag, it anonymously picks up this signal. The beauty is in the numbers - with over a billion Apple devices worldwide, there's almost always a device nearby to relay the location.

  3. Location Updates The nearby Apple device encrypts the AirTag's location and sends it to Apple's servers. Only the owner's account can decrypt this data. During Airpinpoint setup, you can choose to use your own iCloud account or let Airpinpoint manage it. We strongly recommend purchasing managed tags from Airpinpoint to avoid setup complexity. If you do bring your own iCloud account, use dedicated accounts for your tags.

Are AirTags Waterproof?

AirTags are water resistant, not waterproof. Both AirTag 1 and AirTag 2 carry an IP67 rating: survives submersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes, and fully dust-proof.

What that means in practice:

ScenarioAirTag survives?
Rain, snow, splashesYes
Dropped in a puddle, sink, or toilet (retrieved promptly)Yes
Washing machine cycleUsually — dry it before reuse
Attached to equipment stored outdoors year-roundYes, but UV and temperature swings age the gasket
Pressure washingNo — high-pressure jets exceed IP67
Submerged on a boat anchor, left in standing waterNo — 30-minute limit, and depth beyond 1m breaks the seal
SaltwaterRinse with fresh water immediately; salt corrodes the battery contacts

Three caveats the spec sheet doesn't tell you:

  • The rating degrades. IP67 is tested on a new unit. Every battery swap re-seats the gasket, and a year of vibration on a trailer or toolbox loosens it. Treat an older AirTag as splash-proof, not submersible.
  • The speaker is the weak point. After a soak, the speaker can sound muffled until fully dry. Give it 24 hours before assuming it's damaged.
  • Water blocks Bluetooth. Even a perfectly sealed AirTag underwater is nearly invisible to the Find My network — water absorbs 2.4 GHz signal. A submerged tag usually stops reporting until it surfaces.

For outdoor equipment, trailers, boats, or anything pressure-washed: put the AirTag in a $5-10 waterproof case (sealed TPU or hard-shell with an O-ring) and mount the case where water drains away rather than pools. That upgrades the practical protection well past IP67 and protects the gasket from UV. This is standard practice for the construction and marine deployments we see on Airpinpoint — bare AirTags indoors, cased AirTags on anything that lives outside.
