AirTag Detected Near You: What the Alert Means and What to Do

Short answer: An "AirTag detected near you" alert means your phone has seen an AirTag that is away from its owner and has been moving with you over time. On an iPhone the notification reads AirTag Found Moving With You. It does not prove someone is tracking you, since borrowed bags, shared cars and tagged work gear trigger it too, but you should find the tag before you ignore it. Tap the alert, play a sound, then read the tag's serial number with NFC.

What "AirTag Found Moving With You" Means

The alert is part of Apple's unwanted tracking protection. Every AirTag broadcasts a Bluetooth identifier that changes often. Your iPhone notices when the same unknown AirTag keeps showing up near you in different places while it is not near the iPhone of the person who registered it, and then it notifies you.

Tapping the alert opens a map in Find My. The red dots are places where the unknown item was detected near your iPhone, and the dashed lines show the order. Apple notes the red dots do not mean the owner is looking at the item's location at that moment.

Since iOS 17.5 the same system covers trackers from other brands that follow the Apple and Google industry specification, so the alert can name a Chipolo, Pebblebee or similar tag instead of an AirTag.

Is the AirTag Really Tracking You? Common False Alarms

Most alerts have an innocent cause, though you only know which once you find the tag. These are the usual ones:

SituationWhy it triggers the alertWhat to check
Borrowed bag, jacket or keysThe owner's AirTag is in the item and the owner is not with youAsk the owner. Family Sharing members can mute alerts for that item
Shared or rental carA previous driver or the owner left an AirTag in the carGlovebox, console, trunk, under seats
Rideshare or carpoolAnother passenger's AirTag rode with you for a whileAlert usually stops once you part ways
Company vehicle or toolsYour employer tags vans, trailers or toolboxes with AirTagsAsk your fleet manager. See the section on work alerts below
Your own AirTag on a different Apple AccountThe tag is registered to a family member's accountLook up the serial number in Find My

If you are borrowing an item from someone in your Family Sharing group, Apple lets you tap the notification and turn off alerts for that item for one day or indefinitely.

How to Find the AirTag

  1. Tap the alert, then tap Continue.
  2. Tap Play Sound. Listen and repeat it if you need more time. If Play Sound is missing, the AirTag may no longer be with you, may be back near its owner, or its identifier may have changed overnight.
  3. Tap Find (Find Nearby) if you have an iPhone with Ultra Wideband. Precision Finding then shows the distance and direction to the unknown AirTag. Walk around until it connects.
  4. Search by hand if neither works. Check jacket pockets, the outer pockets of bags, wheel wells, the trunk liner and under car seats. If you cannot find it and feel unsafe, go to a public place and contact the police.

To scan a car properly, including for hidden GPS trackers that send no alert at all, follow our 60-second phone scan for a hidden tracker.

Read the Serial Number and Owner Info

Once you have the AirTag, hold the top of your iPhone, or any NFC phone, near the white side of the tag until a notification appears. Tap it to open Apple's information page. It shows the AirTag's serial number and the last four digits of the phone number of the person who registered it. If the owner marked it as lost, you will also see their contact message.

Take a screenshot of that page before you do anything else. If you report the tag, police can ask Apple for information tied to that serial number.

On iPhone you can also open Find My, tap Items, scroll to the bottom and tap Identify Found Item, or tap Unknown Items Detected with You to see every tracker that has alerted you recently.

How to Disable an AirTag That Is Following You

Tap the alert and choose Instructions to Disable. For an AirTag this means removing the battery: press down on the steel back, twist it counterclockwise, lift it off and take out the CR2032 coin cell. Once the battery is out, the owner gets no more location updates and your alerts for that tag stop.

If you think the AirTag was planted to follow you, keep the photo of the serial number page and consider handing the tag to police with its battery removed, rather than throwing it away.

AirTag Alerts on Android

Android 6.0 and later has unknown tracker alerts built in, using the same specification Apple and Google published together. When an unknown AirTag or compatible tracker seems to be moving with you away from its owner, Android shows a notification with a map, a Play Sound option and steps to disable it.

You can also scan on demand. On most Android phones the setting is under Settings, then Safety and emergency, then Unknown tracker alerts, then Scan now. Apple's older Tracker Detect app for Android is still listed on Google Play but is no longer needed on current Android versions. More detail is in our guide to using an AirTag with Android.

How to Make Sure You Get Tracking Notifications on iPhone

Apple lists these settings for unwanted tracking alerts. iOS 14.5 or later is required, and iOS 17.5 or later for third-party trackers.

  1. Update to iOS 17.5 or later.
  2. Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services: turn Location Services on.
  3. In Location Services, open System Services and turn on Significant Locations.
  4. Settings, Bluetooth: turn Bluetooth on.
  5. Settings, Notifications, Tracking Notifications: turn on Allow Notifications.
  6. Turn off Airplane Mode, which blocks tracking notifications.

If Your Company Tags Its Vehicles or Tools With AirTags

Businesses that put AirTags on vans, trailers and toolboxes see this alert from the other side. A technician who drives a tagged truck home every night will eventually get "AirTag Found Moving With You", because the tag is separated from the iPhone of whoever registered it.

The fix is to tell drivers which assets are tagged, put that in your written tracking policy, and keep the tags registered to a company account rather than a manager's personal Apple Account. Tracking people without consent is a crime in many places, and Apple says AirTags should not be used to track people. For the legal side of fleet and equipment tracking, read our employee GPS tracking laws guide.

Airpinpoint shows company AirTags on one fleet map with geofence alerts and location history, so the tags stay an asset tool and not a personal one.

FAQ

What does "AirTag detected near you" mean?

It means your phone has spotted an AirTag that is away from its owner and has been traveling with you over time. On iPhone the alert is titled "AirTag Found Moving With You". It can be a borrowed item or a tagged work vehicle, so find the tag and check its serial number before deciding.

Can I turn off unknown tracker alerts?

On iPhone you can turn off Tracking Notifications in Settings, but Apple recommends leaving them on. For an item borrowed from someone in your Family Sharing group, you can mute alerts for just that item for one day or indefinitely. On Android, unknown tracker alerts can be switched off in the safety settings.

Why does my iPhone say AirTag detected but I can't find it?

The AirTag may have left with its owner, or its Bluetooth identifier may have changed overnight, which removes the Play Sound option. Check Unknown Items Detected with You in Find My. If it is still with you, search pockets, bag linings and the car by hand.

Can someone track me with a Tile or Chipolo?

Yes, any Bluetooth tracker can be misused, but trackers that follow the Apple and Google specification trigger the same alerts. On iPhone with iOS 17.5 or later the alert names the product, for example "Chipolo Found Moving With You". Android 6.0 and later shows its own unknown tracker alert.

Does an AirTag alert mean the owner can see where I am?

Possibly. If the AirTag is with you, the owner can see its location in Find My whenever a nearby Apple device reports it. Removing the battery stops that. The red dots on your alert map show where the tag was near you, not when the owner looked.

Tracking equipment for a business?

Most people reading this are tracking personal items, which AirTags handle fine on their own. If you manage gear for a company, Airpinpoint runs 6,700+ AirTags across construction equipment, trailers, medical devices, and AV gear from one dashboard.
